Spathiphyllum is also known as the Peace Lily and the Closet Plant.
This is a plant with large, dark green leaves,
with equal veins radiating from the central
leaf vein. The leaves are fixed upon erect
slender stalks, which grow directly out of
the soil. The flower is somewhat like a Anthurium
or Calla Lily made up of a similar stalk
the upper end of which is a column of tiny
flowers, set closely all the way round the
central column. This central column is surrounded
by a waxy opaque leaflike bract, which is
concave on the inside with the top curving
slightly over the central column and flowers.
Cactaceae schlumbergera is also known as the Christmas Cactus.
There are three species of schlumbergera,
which are native to moist tropical forests.
Much like Orchids, in their native habitat,
the schlumbergera are found growing in pockets of leaf debris
and other humus in forks and other clefts
of trees and branches. Most of those you
purchased are hybrids of the species. They
are also sometimes called Thanksgiving Cactus because they may start to bloom around Thanksgiving
and on through Christmas. They may also bloom
in the early spring months again. The color
of the blooms can range from bright colors
such as pink, magenta, orange and even white
through pastels of these same colors. Schlumbergera may be raised in outside pots until danger
of frost, then taken inside. They seem to
know when it is time to get ready to bloom,
as the blossoms may start to form before
the weather gets more than cool in the South.
